The History of Boynton Beach

This area is named after a Civil War major by the name of Nathan Boynton. He first noticed this area two years before Henry Flagler would build his railroad through it. The natural beauty, the year-round sun, and the perfect beaches all impressed him. He decided to build the famous Boynton Hotel here. He spent winters in it with his family.

Many of the original settlers were people who came down from Boynton’s home state of Michigan. These settlers soon discovered that the fertile soil and climate made for great harvests of fruits and vegetables. These items were packed and shipped on the Florida East Coast Railroad. Originally, Boynton and Boynton Beach were two separate cities, but the latter became Ocean Ridge while the former took the current name in 1941.

From the 1920’s to today, Boynton Beach Oceanfront Park continues to be a popular destination for both residents and visitors. It is located just north of the original Boynton Hotel site. In the mid-1990’s, it was renovated and the boardwalk was rebuilt out of recycled plastic. The Palm Beach Post in 2001 named it the best family beach in Palm Beach County.
